Dr. Cheng Xin, an aerospace specialist, oversaw the Ladder Plan for active reconnaissance of the Three-Body fleet and launched Yun Tianming's donated brain into space in order to combat the impending invasion of Earth by the Three-Body people. Cheng Xin went into hibernation after discovering that Yun Tianming had given her a star and had loved her all her life. After waking up two centuries later, Cheng Xin gave the star to the United Nations, which led to her being chosen as the sword bearer to thwart the Three-Body.
